SmartFace: The Benefits of Instant Face Search in Public Security
From crime prevention to the optimization of manpower, SmartFace 5 – our facial recognition platform – has proven ...

Fingerprints, faces and irises – all of them benchmarked by NIST – is a feat achieved by only a select group of biometric technology vendors. In January this year, Innovatrics joined their distinguished ranks. Iris is considered the most reliable and accurate biometric modality although it requires special equipment for touchless scanning. IREX, the NIST iris benchmark, has only 19 entries from 15 companies – much fewer than the over 200 entries in the facial recognition benchmark, FRVT.
“Training a reliable, accurate and fast algorithm for iris was the focus of our efforts in 2021. We’ve used everything we have learned in facial recognition and applied it to irises,” Marian Beszedes, Head of R&D at Innovatrics, explains.
Iris recognition is widely used for border control purposes due to its high accuracy, but its applications also extend to other high-security environments. With hardware vendors searching for cheaper and reliable iris scanning, the use of this modality is expected to grow and spread.
