Innovatrics ABIS has ramped up its criminal investigation capabilities with soft biometric identification. An investigator or law enforcement officer can now add scars, marks, and tattoos (SMT) to a person’s profile, which are the most commonly used soft biometrics traits, and can also perform searches against the database for these specific characteristics.
Sometimes the biometric data may be missing, or in some cases, difficult to retrieve. In instances where the primary biometric data (face and fingerprint) are insufficient to identify a person, soft biometrics can help narrow down the list of suspects and speed up the investigation process. Soft biometrics such as SMT gives more detailed information compared to demographic markers like race, gender, and age to identify an individual.
Given the intuitive user interface of Innovatrics ABIS, it is quite easy to add labels or attributes to a person’s profile or to evidence that comply with NIST standards for photographic evidence. Say an officer has acquired a picture of a tattoo from a person of interest, they simply have to upload the photo to the database and define the type, location, the code list based on NIST guidelines, and other standard values with a few clicks on the SMT menu. Correspondingly, they can quickly search through numerous files with SMT traits and instantly get the closest and most relevant hits even in the absence of primary biometric information.
